Μπλεριό XI
Τον Ιούλιο του 1909 πραγματοποιήθηκε η ιστορική πτήση πάνω από την Μάγχη με αεροπλάνο. Το επίτευγμα αυτό πραγματοποιήθηκε από τον Λουί Μπλεριό, έναν σημαντικό δημιουργό αεροπλάνων που βελτίωσε πάρα πολύ τον σχεδιασμό τους, σε σχέση με το Flyer I. Σε αντίθεση με άλλα αεροπλάνα, είχε μόνο ένα επίπεδο φτερών (μονόπτερο), ενώ η μηχανή ήταν στο μπροστινό μέρος.Το αεροπλάνο που κατάφερε να περάσει πρώτο την Μάγχη ήταν το Bleriot XI, το οποίο πολύ σύντομα βελτιώθηκε σημαντικά και έλαβε μέρος σε μάχες στον Α’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.
Bleriot XI
On July 1909, a historic flight took place, the first crossing of the English Channel by a heavier-than-air aircraft. This achievement is attrubuted to Louis Blériot, a pioneer in aviation. He managed to greatly improve the designs of his planes, compared with the Flyer I of the Wright Brothers, by developing single-wing aicraft (monoplanes) with the engine placed at the front. The Blériot XI, the aircraft that crossed the English Channel, was soon improved and used extensively during World War I.
