Spirit of St. Louis
Στις 20 Μαϊου του 1927, ξεκίνησε το πρώτο υπερατλαντικό ταξίδι με αεροπλάνο. Ο Τσαρλς Λίντμπεργκ πέταξε το μονοπλάνο του πάνω από τον Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό, με αφετηρία την Νέα Υόρκη με προορισμό το Παρίσι. Το αεροπλάνο του ονομαζόταν “Spirit of St. Louis”. Πρόκειται για ένα αμερικανικής κατασκευής αεροπλάνο, το οποίο -σε αντίθεση με τα περισσότερα της εποχής του- είχε το φτερό στο πάνω μέρος, ενώ η καμπίνα του πιλότου ήταν κλειστή για να τον προστατεύει από τον άνεμο και τη βροχή. Η ιστορική πτήση διήρκησε 33 ώρες και 30 λεπτά.
The first transatlantic flight begun on May the 20th, 1927. Charles Lindberg flew his monoplane, single engine aircraft, over the Atlantic Ocean, taking off from New York and landing in Paris. The plane was named “Spirit of St. Louis” and was designed and constructed in California. It was innovative for its time, placing the single wing on the top of the plane and featuring a close cabin for the pilot, protecting him from rain and wind during flight. The historical flight lasted for 33 hours and 30 minutes and was non-stop.
